Bauhaus Prints and Modernist Wall Art
Discover Bauhaus prints inspired by one of the most influential schools of modern art, architecture and design. This curated GalleryThane collection brings together geometric abstraction, experimental photography, studies of colour and form, and stylised figurative works by artists connected to the Bauhaus and its wider modernist circle.
Explore artworks by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy and Oskar Schlemmer, together with selected geometric compositions by Theo van Doesburg whose De Stijl ideas helped shape the development of Bauhaus design. Available as fine art prints, framed prints and canvas panels, these works bring structure, colour and distinctive twentieth-century character to contemporary interiors.
What Was the Bauhaus?
The Bauhaus was founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany, in 1919. The school brought together painting, architecture, typography, photography, theatre, furniture and industrial design, encouraging artists and craftspeople to work across traditional boundaries.
After moving from Weimar to Dessau and later Berlin, the Bauhaus became an international centre for experimental modernism. Its teachers and students explored how colour, geometry, materials, technology and practical design could be combined to create art suited to modern life. Although the school closed in 1933, its influence can still be seen in contemporary architecture, graphic design, interiors and abstract art.
Wassily Kandinsky Bauhaus Prints
Wassily Kandinsky joined the Bauhaus in 1922 and taught there until the school closed. During this period, his painting became increasingly structured, with circles, triangles, lines and carefully balanced geometric forms replacing the freer expression of many of his earlier works.
Kandinsky’s Bauhaus-period prints combine strong colour with a sense of rhythm and movement. Works from the Small Worlds portfolio and compositions such as Circles in a Circle, Delicate Tension and Soft Pressure make striking focal points for living rooms, offices, hallways and creative workspaces.
Paul Klee and the Poetry of Colour
Paul Klee taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1931, developing influential theories about colour, movement, pattern and pictorial construction. His work combines geometric order with imagination, humour and delicate visual rhythm.
Paul Klee prints can feel playful, mysterious or quietly contemplative. His grids, signs, architectural forms and luminous colour relationships make his artwork especially suitable for bedrooms, studies, reading areas and interiors where a softer interpretation of Bauhaus modernism is preferred.
László Moholy-Nagy: Light, Photography and Technology
László Moholy-Nagy was one of the Bauhaus’s most experimental teachers. Influenced by Constructivism, he explored painting, typography, photography, photograms, sculpture, film and industrial materials.
Moholy-Nagy’s abstract compositions often feature intersecting planes, circles, lines and transparent forms that suggest light moving through space. His photographs and architectural viewpoints also reflect the Bauhaus interest in technology, machinery and new ways of seeing the modern city.
These prints are particularly effective in minimalist homes, design studios, offices and contemporary interiors with clean lines, monochrome furnishings or industrial materials.
Oskar Schlemmer and the Geometric Figure
Oskar Schlemmer brought painting, sculpture, costume and theatre together through his work at the Bauhaus stage workshop. He is best known for reducing the human body to simplified geometric forms and exploring the relationship between figures and architectural space.
Schlemmer prints offer a distinctive alternative to purely abstract Bauhaus art. Their ordered interiors, stylised people and carefully constructed spaces work well in modern living rooms, hallways, offices and interiors influenced by architecture and design.
Theo van Doesburg, De Stijl and the Bauhaus
Theo van Doesburg was not an official Bauhaus teacher, but his De Stijl ideas had an important influence on the school’s development. His geometric compositions use straight lines, primary colours, rectangular planes and dynamic diagonals to create a highly ordered visual language.
Selected Van Doesburg prints complement Bauhaus artworks by Kandinsky, Klee and Moholy-Nagy, particularly in gallery walls centred on geometric abstraction and European modernism. These works should be understood as Bauhaus-associated De Stijl art rather than as products of the Bauhaus school itself.
Choosing Bauhaus Wall Art for Your Interior
Bauhaus wall art is especially well suited to modern, minimalist, mid-century and Scandinavian-inspired interiors. Its strong shapes and controlled compositions can reinforce the architectural lines of a room, while primary colours introduce energy without requiring elaborate decoration.
For a bold focal point, choose a large Kandinsky or Moholy-Nagy print above a sofa, sideboard or desk. Smaller geometric works can be arranged in pairs, grids or coordinated gallery walls. Repeating black, red, blue or yellow across several artworks can help create a visually unified display.
Monochrome and restrained geometric works suit professional offices and minimalist spaces, while more colourful abstract art prints can enliven neutral living rooms, dining areas and creative studios. Black frames provide a crisp architectural finish, while white mounts allow intricate lines and geometric forms space to breathe.
Fine Art Prints, Framed Prints and Canvas Panels
GalleryThane Bauhaus artwork is available in a wide range of sizes and formats. Choose an unframed fine art print for flexible presentation, a handmade framed print for a complete gallery-style finish, or a ready-to-hang canvas panel for a clean contemporary appearance.
Our prints, frames and canvas panels are produced in our Nottinghamshire workshop using carefully selected fine art papers, canvas, responsibly sourced timber and UV-stable pigment inks. Each reproduction is created to preserve the clarity, colour and geometric precision of the original artwork.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main characteristics of Bauhaus art?
Bauhaus art often uses simplified geometry, primary colours, strong lines, asymmetrical balance and experimental compositions. However, the Bauhaus was a school rather than a single visual style, and its artists worked across painting, photography, typography, architecture, theatre and product design.
Which artists are associated with the Bauhaus?
Important Bauhaus artists and teachers include Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Oskar Schlemmer, Josef Albers, Lyonel Feininger and Johannes Itten. Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe served as directors of the school.
Is Theo van Doesburg a Bauhaus artist?
Theo van Doesburg was the founder of De Stijl and was not formally employed by the Bauhaus. However, he taught private courses near the school in Weimar and his ideas about geometry, colour and the unity of art and architecture influenced its development.
Are all Kandinsky and Paul Klee paintings Bauhaus works?
No. Both artists produced important work before joining the Bauhaus and continued working after leaving it. A historically precise Bauhaus collection should prioritise artworks created during their years at the school or works that clearly reflect their Bauhaus teaching and design principles.
Where should Bauhaus prints be displayed?
Bauhaus prints work particularly well in living rooms, home offices, studios, hallways, dining rooms and modern commercial spaces. Their clear geometry and strong colour also make them effective above desks, sofas, consoles and minimalist furniture.
What colours work well with Bauhaus wall art?
Bauhaus prints pair naturally with white, cream, grey, black and natural wood. Red, blue and yellow artworks can provide strong accents, while monochrome compositions suit more restrained interiors. Black frames usually create the cleanest and most architectural presentation.
