Varietétänzer (1928) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Varietétänzer (1928), meaning Variety Dancer, is a dramatic study of performance and movement. A brightly coloured dancer appears beneath or beside a dark sweeping stage form, while deep blue and green surround the figure and intensify the sense of theatrical light.

The original is pastel and coloured chalk on light card and measures approximately 63.5 × 50.5 cm. Pechstein monogrammed and dated the work in 1928.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this vertical performance image makes a striking accent in living rooms, music rooms, hallways and eclectic interiors.

Movement under theatrical light

The dancer is defined less by facial detail than by the curve and colour of the body. Dark surrounding forms heighten the glowing orange and red passages, giving the image the visual drama of a stage spotlight.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Pastel and coloured chalk allow Pechstein to combine dense, velvety dark areas with brilliant strokes of colour. The result has a painterly richness despite being a work on paper.
