Two Girls at the Table (1910) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Two Girls at the Table (1910), or Zwei Mädchen am Tisch, captures two young women in an informal interior. One figure reclines against a green-blue sofa while the other sits closer to the table, creating a relaxed composition based on gesture and everyday observation.

The original is watercolour over black chalk on brownish wove paper and measures approximately 33.2 × 43.3 cm. One of the figures is associated with Fränzi, Lina Franziska Fehrmann, a favoured model of the Brücke artists.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this horizontal work brings soft green, beige and blue tones to bedrooms, studies and living spaces.

An intimate Brücke-era interior

The figures are linked by the open space of the table and the broad curve of the sofa behind them. Pechstein leaves much of the paper visible, keeping the scene light and spontaneous.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Black chalk establishes the structure while watercolour provides transparent areas of green, blue, red and warm flesh colour. The economical technique preserves the immediacy of a direct study.
