The Source (1906) by Hermann Max Pechstein
The Source (1906), or Die Quelle, is an exceptionally early female nude in Pechstein's painted oeuvre. A seated figure occupies the centre of a richly coloured natural setting, with flowers, patterned ground and water-like forms turning the landscape into an almost decorative tapestry.
The original is oil on canvas measuring approximately 102 × 112 cm. Painted in 1906, the work belongs to the very beginning of Pechstein's development towards the intensified colour and simplified forms later associated with Expressionism.
This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its near-square composition works particularly well in gallery walls, alcoves and balanced feature spaces.
An early nude within nature
The figure is not separated from the landscape. Flesh, flowers, water and patterned vegetation share similar colour intensity, making the entire surface active and decorative.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.
Style and technique
Oil paint is applied with a more modelled touch than in Pechstein's later mature Expressionism, yet the growing emphasis on strong colour and simplified shapes is already clearly visible.
