The Chinese Jacket (c. 1918) by Hermann Max Pechstein
The Chinese Jacket, or Die chinesische Jacke, is a compact portrait centred on a woman in a brilliant blue-and-white garment. The strong blue sleeves and yellow-white front create a clear geometric structure around the sitter's face and hands.
The original is an oil painting on card measuring approximately 34.8 × 30.3 cm and is generally dated to around 1918. The reverse carries the title and the name Dora, linking the work with Dora Steinbart.
Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this vertical portrait adds strong blue colour to bedrooms, studies, hallways and gallery walls.
Costume as a framework for portraiture
The jacket is not simply clothing but one of the main organising elements of the picture. Its blue areas frame the torso and draw attention upward to the sitter's face, while yellow and warm brown provide contrast.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.
Style and technique
Pechstein applies oil with a direct, simplified touch. Broad colour fields and dark linear accents replace highly finished detail, giving the small portrait an unusually concentrated visual impact.
