Rettungshaus in den Dünen (1920) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Rettungshaus in den Dünen (1920) depicts a bright red rescue house rising between dune vegetation and the Baltic coast. The building acts as a bold colour accent against pale sand, green foliage, blue water and a luminous sky.

The original is oil on canvas mounted on painting board and measures approximately 47.7 × 38.5 cm. Pechstein painted the scene during the years when he spent summer months in Nidden on the Curonian Spit, a landscape that inspired numerous coastal works.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its vertical format and fresh red-green-blue palette make it a strong choice for hallways, living rooms and coastal-inspired interiors.

A red landmark among the dunes

The rescue house is simplified into a strong block of red and orange, immediately separating it from the surrounding greens and pale dune grasses. A glimpse of sea at the left places the architecture firmly within the coastal landscape.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Broad oil brushwork and saturated complementary colours give the small landscape exceptional vitality. Pechstein lets the red building carry much of the composition's visual weight.
