Kloster von San Gimignano (1913) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Kloster von San Gimignano (1913) is a bright architectural landscape from Pechstein's third Italian journey. Red-roofed monastery buildings rise from a green foreground beneath tall dark trees, with warm Tuscan colour compressed into a direct, decorative composition.

The original is watercolour, gouache and graphite on paper and measures approximately 41.3/41.9 × 54.4 cm. Pechstein monogrammed and dated the work in 1913.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its horizontal format and warm architectural palette suit living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and Mediterranean-inspired interiors.

Architecture observed in the Tuscan landscape

The monastery is presented not as a precise architectural record but as a group of red, cream and yellow shapes held within dark green vegetation. The contrast makes the buildings feel sunlit and immediate.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Watercolour and gouache supply both transparent and opaque colour, while graphite establishes the underlying structure. The combination allows Pechstein to retain the freshness of outdoor drawing while giving the image substantial colour weight.
