Flower Still Life (1913) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Flower Still Life (1913) presents potted pale flowers, fruit and small vessels arranged closely on a dark tabletop. The scene is immediately recognisable, yet Pechstein reshapes it through emphatic contour, simplified forms and a deliberately concentrated palette.

Created in 1913, the work comes from a period in which Pechstein was developing his art independently after his Brücke years while retaining a direct, expressive approach to landscape, figures and everyday subjects.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. The intimate vertical format works well in kitchens, dining rooms and smaller feature walls.

Flowers, colour and decorative rhythm

The tall plant creates the main vertical axis, while oranges and smaller containers form a lower horizontal group. Deep greens and burgundy tones give the still life unusual richness.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and a major figure in German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and developed a recognisable language of forceful contour, simplified form and heightened colour. Landscapes, fishing communities, portraits, nudes and still lifes remained recurring subjects throughout his career.

Style and technique

Pechstein organises the objects through broad shapes, strong outlines and deliberately intensified colour. Rather than pursuing polished naturalism, he uses contrast and pattern to make the arrangement feel immediate and decorative.
