Der Jüngling (1917) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Der Jüngling (1917) presents a group of island figures in a lush, tropical setting, with the centrally seated youth anchoring the composition. Warm brown and red skin tones, deep greens and cool blues are organised into broad simplified shapes, giving the painting a powerful decorative rhythm.

The original is an oil painting on canvas measuring approximately 51 × 69 cm. Created during Pechstein's mature Expressionist period, it reflects the artist's continuing fascination with figures, non-European settings and direct, saturated colour.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, Der Jüngling brings warmth and intensity to living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and eclectic modern interiors.

Figures, colour and tropical landscape

Pechstein arranges the figures as a connected group rather than isolated portraits. Curving bodies, dark outlines and broad areas of vegetation create a compact, almost frieze-like scene in which colour carries much of the emotional force.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the major figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and developed a highly recognisable visual language built around simplified forms, emphatic contours and heightened colour. Figures, coastal life, landscapes and portraits remained central themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Painted in oil on canvas, the work uses simplified modelling and strongly separated colour areas. The handling is direct and expressive, favouring rhythmic contour and chromatic contrast over conventional depth.
