Resting Girl (1921) by Hermann Max Pechstein
Resting Girl (1921), or Ruhendes Mädchen, depicts a young woman reclining in quiet contemplation. Her pale clothing and dark skirt create a broad diagonal across the sheet, while green and blue accents suggest the surrounding studio environment.
The original is a watercolour over pencil measuring approximately 44.4 × 60.8 cm. The background has been linked to wall decoration in Pechstein's Berlin studio, giving the image an unusually personal interior setting.
Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this calm horizontal composition is particularly suited to bedrooms, living rooms and relaxed reading spaces.
A private moment of rest
The figure is shown at close range, with little narrative distraction. Her reclining pose and lowered gaze create a mood of stillness, while the broad blue and green areas prevent the composition from becoming visually static.
About Hermann Max Pechstein
Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.
Style and technique
Transparent and more concentrated watercolour passages are laid over a pencil structure. The mixture of light washes and stronger accents gives the figure softness while preserving Pechstein's direct drawing.
