The Langlois Bridge, painted in Arles in March 1888, is one of Vincent van Gogh’s earliest major landscapes after his move to southern France. A wooden drawbridge spans the canal while a pale road cuts diagonally through the foreground, leading the viewer towards the bridge and distant buildings.

The subject reminded Van Gogh of the drawbridges of the Netherlands, yet the bright Provençal surroundings gave him an opportunity to rethink a familiar structure through much clearer colour and simplified composition.

The Langlois Bridge Series

Van Gogh returned to the bridge repeatedly, producing several paintings, watercolours and drawings from different viewpoints. He was interested not only in the surrounding landscape but also in the mechanical structure of the bridge itself.

In this version, the strong horizontals and verticals of the bridge contrast with the diagonal road and the softer shapes of water, vegetation and sky.

Van Gogh, Arles and Japanese Composition

Van Gogh regarded southern France as a place where he might find some of the clarity and colour he admired in Japanese prints. The Langlois Bridge compositions demonstrate that influence through their strong outlines, unusual viewpoints and simplified areas of colour.

The canal-side road creates a particularly pronounced diagonal movement, drawing the eye directly from the foreground towards the bridge.
