The Harvest (1888) by Vincent van Gogh

The Harvest is one of Vincent van Gogh’s great panoramic landscapes from Arles. Painted during the summer of 1888, it presents the agricultural countryside under the intense heat of Provence, with golden fields, farm buildings, stacks of harvested grain and distant hills spreading across the composition.

Van Gogh was particularly pleased with the painting. The combination of golden yellow and clear blue allowed him to capture what he considered the essential character of the southern landscape while also exploring the seasonal cycle of rural work.

The Arles Harvest

Rather than concentrating on a single worker or field, Van Gogh creates a broad panorama of agricultural activity. Different areas of cultivated land form bands of colour across the landscape while small figures, carts and buildings give the scene scale.

The result is both observational and highly organised. The eye travels across paths, fields and distant structures, making the vast countryside itself the principal subject.

Old Gold and Azure Blue

Golden wheat and harvested earth dominate the foreground and middle distance, set against areas of clear blue and blue-green. Van Gogh used these contrasting colours to communicate the intense brightness and heat of Provence.

Although the scene contains numerous details, the broad colour relationships keep the composition unified and give it immediate impact from across a room.

A Warm Van Gogh Landscape Print

The Harvest is particularly effective in rooms that benefit from warm natural colour. Its gold, ochre and blue palette works beautifully with cream, sand, brown, blue and natural timber.

The panoramic landscape format makes it an excellent choice above sofas, beds, sideboards and dining furniture, either as a single statement piece or alongside other Van Gogh wheat-field paintings.

About Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) moved to Arles in 1888 seeking the brighter light and colour of southern France. The surrounding fields, orchards and rural landscape inspired an exceptionally productive period in which he developed many of the colour relationships and expressive techniques now associated with his mature work.

Vincent van Gogh’s Painting Style

Van Gogh used colour increasingly independently from strict naturalism. His Arles landscapes combine direct observation with simplified shapes, visible brushwork and strong complementary colours. In The Harvest, this approach turns ordinary agricultural countryside into a luminous and carefully structured panorama.
