Hiroshige Okitsu – Okitsu River Print

Okitsu captures one of the practical challenges of travelling the Tōkaidō in nineteenth-century Japan: crossing a river without the convenience of a modern bridge.

Porters carry a traveller and palanquin through the shallow Okitsu River while another traveller follows on horseback. In the distance, ships and Mount Fuji connect the immediate human activity with a much wider landscape.

The Tōkaidō highway linked Edo with Kyoto through fifty-three official post stations.

Hiroshige's famous Hōeidō series follows this route through an extraordinary variety of settings: towns, mountains, snow, rain, ferries, bridges and rivers.

Okitsu is particularly valuable within the sequence because it shows how dependent travellers could be upon other people to negotiate the landscape.

Andō Hiroshige Biography

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was a master of Japanese ukiyo-e whose landscapes changed the way familiar places could be represented in popular prints.

His early success with The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō established a career centred on travel, famous places and atmospheric landscape.

Hiroshige later produced numerous views of Edo and other regions of Japan as well as prints of fish, birds and flowers. His innovative compositions influenced artists far beyond Japan after ukiyo-e became increasingly visible in Europe.
