Hiroshige Okazaki – Yahagi Bridge Print
Okazaki is one of the great bridge compositions in Hiroshige's Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. The long Yahagi Bridge stretches across the river towards the castle town of Okazaki, carrying travellers and a formal procession through a broad landscape of water, settlement and distant hills.
Hiroshige makes the bridge more than a piece of architecture. Its sweeping horizontal span becomes the visual route through the composition, recreating the experience of approaching an important post town along Japan's historic Tōkaidō highway.
Yahagi Bridge and Okazaki
Okazaki was an important castle town and one of the official stations on the road between Edo and Kyoto. The Yahagi River formed a major feature of the approach to the town, and its substantial bridge became an obvious subject for Hiroshige.
Instead of moving the bridge into the background, he allows it to occupy much of the width of the print. The procession of tiny travellers crossing it reinforces both its scale and the distance still to be travelled.
The result is an image in which transport, architecture and landscape become inseparable.
Hiroshige's Artistic Style
Hiroshige frequently used bridges, roads and rivers to guide the viewer through a composition. In Okazaki the bridge performs all three functions at once: it creates a strong graphic line, establishes depth and tells us how people move through the landscape.
The broad horizontal format suits the subject perfectly. Carefully controlled colour allows the bridge and figures to remain readable while the more distant town and hills recede gently into space.
Andō Hiroshige Biography
Utagawa Hiroshige was born in Edo in 1797 and became one of Japan's greatest ukiyo-e landscape designers.
His breakthrough came with the early-1830s Hōeidō edition of The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, a series that transformed familiar locations on the road between Edo and Kyoto into poetic images of travel.
Hiroshige subsequently explored famous places throughout Japan and produced major late works including One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. His compositions later became a major source of inspiration for European artists during the rise of Japonisme.
Displaying an Okazaki Hiroshige Print
The long bridge and panoramic landscape make Okazaki especially effective as wall art above a sofa, bed, sideboard or desk.
Its muted landscape colours work well with natural timber, neutral walls and interiors influenced by Japanese, Scandinavian or Japandi design.
Okazaki can also be combined with other Tōkaidō bridge and river scenes to create a coordinated Hiroshige gallery wall.
