Hiroshige Arriving at Kyoto Print

Arriving at Kyoto brings Hiroshige's celebrated journey along the Tōkaidō to its destination. Travellers cross the great Sanjō Bridge over the Kamo River as the historic imperial capital opens beyond them, completing one of the most famous journeys in Japanese art.

The design is the concluding image of Hiroshige's celebrated Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. Although the series is named for the road's fifty-three post stations, the complete Hōeidō sequence contains fifty-five prints: the departure from Nihonbashi, the fifty-three stations and this final arrival in Kyoto.

The Final Stage of the Tōkaidō

Sanjō Bridge marked the western terminus of the Tōkaidō highway. After hundreds of kilometres of roads, ferries, rivers, mountains and post towns, travellers finally entered Kyoto across the Kamo River.

Hiroshige fills the bridge with different kinds of traveller. Figures moving in opposite directions create the sense of a living route rather than a ceremonial endpoint, while the distant city and mountains give the composition an expansive conclusion.

The contrast with the opening image at Nihonbashi is particularly effective. The series begins amid the commercial energy of Edo and finishes at another great bridge in Japan's ancient imperial capital.

Hiroshige's Artistic Style

Hiroshige was exceptionally skilled at combining architecture and landscape. Here the long horizontal bridge provides the principal structural line, while the river, distant buildings and mountains create successive layers of depth.

Small figures animate the scene without overwhelming it. This balance between human activity and surrounding landscape is one of the defining characteristics of Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series.

Subtle colour transitions and the broad horizontal format reinforce the feeling of distance and arrival.

Andō Hiroshige Biography

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), also known as Andō Hiroshige, was one of the most influential landscape artists of the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition.

His reputation was transformed by the success of The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō during the 1830s. Hiroshige subsequently produced numerous series devoted to famous places, travel and the changing appearance of Edo.

His late masterpiece, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, continued his exploration of unusual viewpoints, weather and seasonal landscape. Hiroshige's compositions became enormously influential in Europe during the nineteenth century and were studied by artists including Vincent van Gogh.

Arriving at Kyoto in Your Interior

This horizontal Japanese landscape print is especially suited to living rooms, bedrooms, studies and dining rooms. The bridge, river and distant mountains create a balanced panoramic composition that works well above a sofa, sideboard or bed.

It also makes an excellent companion to Nihonbashi, allowing the beginning and end of Hiroshige's Tōkaidō journey to be displayed together.

GalleryThane offers this Hiroshige design as a gallery-quality fine art print with framing and canvas options available.
