Ohara Koson Crow at Full Moon Print

Crow at Full Moon combines three of Ohara Koson's most characteristic elements: a boldly silhouetted bird, a delicate flowering branch and an expansive moonlit background.

A solitary black crow perches prominently on the branch while a pale full moon glows behind and below it. Soft blossoms and leaves provide a lighter counterpoint to the bird's dense plumage.

A Solitary Crow in Moonlight

The crow immediately dominates the image.

Its body forms a deep black shape against the paler sky, while the long beak and carefully articulated feet give the bird considerable character.

The surrounding branches are much lighter and more delicate, allowing the crow to remain visually powerful without requiring dramatic action.

The Full Moon as a Compositional Element

The moon is not simply background decoration.

Its near-perfect circular form provides a geometric contrast to the irregular shapes of bird, flowers and branches.

By placing the moon lower in the composition rather than directly behind the bird, Koson creates a subtle visual balance between the dark crow above and the luminous disc below.

Flowering Branches and Seasonal Nature

Delicate flowers soften the mood considerably.

Without them, the black crow and moon might create a stark nocturnal image. The blossoms introduce a sense of season and fragility, characteristic of the Japanese kachō-ga tradition.

Their pale shapes also provide intermediate tones between the dark bird and the light background.

Colour and Atmosphere

Koson's palette is deliberately restrained.

Black feathers, grey-blue sky, muted branch tones and pale blossom create an atmosphere of quiet evening light.

The moon provides luminosity without overwhelming the composition, while subtle variations in the crow's feathers prevent the bird from becoming a flat silhouette.

Koson's Fascination with Crows

Crows allowed Koson to explore some of his strongest contrasts.

He placed the birds against snow, blossom and moonlight, repeatedly using their dense dark forms against much lighter surroundings.

Each setting changes the mood. Crow at Full Moon is among the most poetic because the solitary bird is combined with the stillness and spaciousness of a night sky.

About Ohara Koson

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) was a master of modern Japanese nature printmaking.

Working across the Meiji, Taishō and early Shōwa periods, he created hundreds of designs featuring birds, flowers, fish and animals.

His work is particularly admired for its refined compositions, subtle atmosphere and ability to capture individual species through posture and silhouette.

Displaying Crow at Full Moon

This print works particularly well in bedrooms, studies, hallways and living spaces where a calm but visually strong focal point is wanted.

The black, blue-grey and cream tones pair naturally with neutral walls, dark frames and timber furniture.

It also works beautifully alongside Crow and Blossom or Crow on Snowy Branch, creating a three-print study of Koson's changing treatment of the crow.
