Wiesen (1928) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Wiesen (1928), meaning Meadows, opens across broad green fields beneath a cool blue sky. Curving tracks, strips of cultivated land and distant tree lines guide the eye through the landscape, creating a spacious counterpoint to Pechstein's more densely figurative works.

The original is oil on canvas measuring approximately 70 × 80 cm. Pechstein painted the work during the years when he spent summers in Rowe, present-day Rowy, in Pomerania, exploring the varied landscape between the Baltic Sea and Lake Garder.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this horizontal landscape brings fresh green and blue colour to living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and offices.

Meadows as a pattern of colour

Fields are simplified into bands and curves of green, with darker lines marking tracks and boundaries. The distant horizon and layered clouds give the image depth while retaining Pechstein's clear, decorative colour structure.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Oil paint is applied in broad, visible strokes that allow several greens and blues to remain distinct. The landscape feels observed from nature but reorganised through Pechstein's strong colour sense.

  • A fresh 1928 landscape from Pechstein's Pomeranian summers.
  • Rich green and blue palette.
  • Available as fine art prints, framed prints and canvas panels.
