The Resting Woman (1911) by Hermann Max Pechstein

The Resting Woman (1911), originally Die Ruhende, shows a woman reclining across a bed in a richly patterned interior. Blue-and-white fabric, a red-pink blouse and warm bedding create a dense field of colour around the resting figure.

The original is an oil painting on canvas measuring approximately 75 × 101 cm. Pechstein signed and dated it in 1911, during the period when the Brücke artists were developing some of their most concentrated figure-and-interior compositions.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its broad horizontal format is particularly effective above beds, sofas and sideboards.

A figure absorbed into the interior

The reclining body is integrated with the surrounding textiles rather than isolated from them. Repeated blue, red and brown shapes turn the bed and figure into a single rhythmic composition.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Broad oil handling, dark contour and simplified forms allow colour to organise the room. Pechstein avoids detailed description, using pattern and contrast to create depth and atmosphere.

  • A significant 1911 Expressionist interior.
  • Horizontal composition ideal for above-bed display.
