Portrait of Freda Wermel in a Blue Blouse (1946) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Portrait of Freda Wermel in a Blue Blouse (1946) is a vivid half-length portrait dominated by the sitter’s turquoise-blue patterned blouse, dark coiffure and red lips. Against a pale background, Freda Wermel appears poised and direct, with colour concentrated almost entirely on the figure.

The original German title is Bildnis Freda Wermel in blauer Bluse. It is oil on canvas mounted on hardboard and measures approximately 63.5 × 51 cm. Freda, who was from Honolulu, sat for Pechstein for a group of portraits commissioned by her husband Dr Michael T. Wermel in post-war Berlin.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this bright vertical portrait works particularly well in bedrooms, dressing spaces, studies and colourful contemporary interiors.

A late portrait built around brilliant blue

The blue blouse is the dominant visual element, while red accents in the lips and pattern direct attention back to Freda’s face. Pechstein keeps the background understated so that costume, expression and colour carry the portrait.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Loose oil brushwork and simplified modelling give the portrait freshness despite its formal pose. The vivid blue fabric and red accents demonstrate Pechstein’s continued commitment to strong colour late in his career.
