Frau Cuhrt (1908) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Frau Cuhrt (1908) is an early portrait from Pechstein’s first Berlin period. The sitter, the wife of his landlord and patron Max Cuhrt, faces the viewer against a deep blue ground, her dark clothing, patterned collar and red floral accents giving the compact portrait unusual presence.

The original is an oil painting on canvas mounted on board, with deliberately slanted corners, measuring approximately 54.5 × 51.5 cm. Its almost square proportions and cropped corners are distinctive features of the original object.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this early Pechstein portrait works especially well in studies, bedrooms and gallery-wall arrangements.

An early Berlin portrait

The portrait predates many of Pechstein’s best-known mature works but already shows his preference for energetic brushwork and concentrated colour. The sitter’s direct presentation is strengthened by the close crop and dense blue background.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, portraits, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Oil paint is applied with visible, vigorous handling rather than smooth academic finish. Blue, black, yellow and red form the principal contrasts, allowing colour and texture to reinforce the sitter’s presence.
