Fischerleben, Monterosso al Mare (1924) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Fischerleben, Monterosso al Mare (1924) captures boats, fishermen and harbour activity with quick, concentrated ink lines. The composition feels like an immediate record of everyday work along the Ligurian coast.

The original is an ink drawing on brownish wove paper measuring approximately 43.7 × 59.5 cm. Pechstein returned to Monterosso in 1924, filling drawings and sketchbooks with the daily activity of the fishing village.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this understated horizontal work suits studies, hallways and monochrome gallery walls.

Everyday fishing life in Monterosso

Boats occupy the central water space while small figures and harbour details are indicated with just a few marks. The loose arrangement gives the scene a sense of movement rather than formal posing.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects, boats and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Ink drawing allows Pechstein to work rapidly, varying between thin descriptive lines and darker accents. The warm paper becomes an active part of the limited palette.
