Dorfhäuser (1921) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Dorfhäuser (1921), meaning Village Houses, arranges steep-roofed buildings, lanes and small figures into a dense Pomeranian village scene. Red roofs and walls stand sharply against blue-green sky and dark shadow.

The original is oil on canvas, approximately 80.5 × 100 cm. It is recorded in Pechstein's workshop book for 1921 and belongs to the group of landscapes connected with his first years working around Leba in Pomerania.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this horizontal village scene creates a bold architectural focal point in living rooms, hallways and dining spaces.

Village architecture in saturated colour

The houses are simplified into large red, cream and black shapes, with the street drawing the viewer through the middle of the composition. Small figures provide scale without distracting from the architecture.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects, boats and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Broad oil brushwork and strongly separated colour planes give the village a monumental presence. Pechstein treats roofs, walls and sky as interlocking blocks rather than finely described surfaces.
