Cliffs and Sun Reflection (c. 1922) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Cliffs and Sun Reflection (c. 1922), from the German title Steilküste und Sonnenspiegelung, looks along a dark coastal cliff towards a bright reflection stretching across the water. The low light turns the sea into a band of gold and blue.

The original is oil on canvas-textured painting board mounted on wood and measures approximately 37.2 × 48 cm. It belongs to Pechstein's highly productive early-1920s period on the Pomeranian Baltic coast.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this glowing seascape makes a strong horizontal focal point above sofas, beds and sideboards.

Sunlight across the Baltic water

The dark cliff at the left frames a long diagonal shoreline, while the reflected sun forms a bright path across the sea. This contrast gives the landscape both depth and dramatic atmosphere.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects, boats and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Oil colour is applied in broad bands and visible strokes. Deep blue-green land and water set off the warm yellow-orange reflection, creating a vivid complementary colour structure.
