Boat at Sunrise (1949) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Boat at Sunrise (1949) places a dark fishing boat prominently against a brilliant yellow dawn and rolling blue sea. The low sun, empty shore and strongly silhouetted hull give the scene both stillness and dramatic colour contrast.

The original is oil on canvas, approximately 70.5 × 80 cm, painted during Pechstein's summer stay at Ückeritz on Usedom. His travel diary records his early-morning attempts to capture the sunrise and fishing boats on the Baltic coast.

This Hermann Max Pechstein print is available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel. Its glowing yellow and blue palette makes a strong focal point in living rooms, bedrooms and coastal-inspired interiors.

A fishing boat at first light

The boat dominates the foreground while the sun sits high enough above the horizon to flood the beach and water with yellow light. The diagonal shoreline carries the eye out towards the open sea.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects, boats and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Broad oil brushwork and simplified shapes give the boat weight while the sky and sea are handled in luminous colour bands. The contrast between dark hull and bright sunrise drives the composition.
