Ausfahrt zum Fischfang (1951) by Hermann Max Pechstein

Ausfahrt zum Fischfang (1951) depicts fishermen preparing a boat at the shoreline while another sailboat crosses the water beyond. Pechstein organises the group into a broad, rhythmic coastal composition in which bodies, oars, boat forms and breaking waves become a single pattern of work and movement.

The original is a watercolour on paper measuring approximately 50.2 × 66.1 cm. Fishing communities had fascinated Pechstein for decades, and this late work shows how strongly the subject continued to shape his art.

Available as a fine art print, handmade framed print or canvas panel, this Pechstein seascape brings clear blue colour and a strong horizontal rhythm to living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and coastal-inspired interiors.

Fishermen, boat and sea

The figures are not treated as individual portraits but as a working group. Their repeated upright and diagonal forms echo the oars, mast and surf, creating a sense of coordinated physical effort against the open sea.

About Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein (1881–1955) was a German painter and printmaker and one of the leading figures of German Expressionism. He joined Die Brücke in 1906 and became known for forceful contours, simplified forms and heightened colour. Figures, working life, coastal subjects and landscapes remained important themes throughout his career.

Style and technique

Transparent watercolour gives the sea and sky freshness while dark contours hold the figures and boats together. Pechstein balances simplified anatomy with broad colour areas, keeping the image direct, decorative and unmistakably Expressionist.
