Evening in Beppu by Hasui Kawase

Evening in Beppu by Hasui Kawase is a haunting 1929 night landscape in which bare trees, dark mountain silhouettes and scattered lights transform a quiet Japanese settlement into an intimate study of evening atmosphere. Created during Hasui's mature shin-hanga period, the scene demonstrates his exceptional ability to use limited colour and artificial light to create a powerful sense of place.

A large leafless tree spreads its branches across much of the composition, forming a delicate dark network against the blue-grey sky. Behind it, mountains rise in almost continuous shadow, while small houses and pathways occupy the lower part of the scene. A handful of glowing windows and lamps provide tiny points of warmth within the surrounding darkness.

A Japanese Night Landscape

Hasui frequently depicted places at moments when ordinary details became transformed by changing light. In Evening in Beppu, the architecture is deliberately subdued and the landscape is allowed to merge gradually into night.

The bare foreground tree is especially important. Its twisting branches act almost like a screen through which the settlement and mountains are viewed. The combination of intricate line and broad dark shapes gives the composition both decorative strength and remarkable atmospheric depth.

Beppu and Souvenirs of Travel

Travel provided Hasui with many of his most important subjects. His Souvenirs of Travel series developed from journeys throughout Japan and recorded coastlines, towns, temples, mountains and hot-spring districts through his distinctive visual language.

Beppu, on the island of Kyushu, was already known for its hot springs and dramatic landscape. Hasui's evening interpretation avoids the more obvious attractions of the location and instead captures the quiet character of the town after daylight has faded.

About Hasui Kawase

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was a leading designer of the shin-hanga movement and one of the most important Japanese landscape artists of the twentieth century. His work is particularly admired for subtle colour gradations and for the way weather and time of day shape the emotional character of a scene.

Night landscapes allowed Hasui to work with an especially restrained palette. Deep blue, grey and black are punctuated by carefully positioned areas of warm light, creating images that feel tranquil rather than gloomy.

Atmospheric Japanese Wall Art

The blue-grey palette and quiet nocturnal mood make Evening in Beppu especially effective in bedrooms, studies and living spaces. It works beautifully in Japandi, minimalist, Scandinavian and Japanese-inspired interiors, particularly alongside natural timber and warm neutral walls.
