Lunia Czechowska sits in a yellow dress holding a pale open fan, her long body arranged in graceful curves against a rich red background. The fan creates a light semicircle across the lower part of the figure, balancing the long vertical of Czechowska’s neck and face.

Yellow fabric, pale fan and warm skin stand out vividly against scarlet and dark red surroundings, making this one of the more strongly coloured portraits in the group. The result is a portrait whose character comes from pose, proportion and colour rather than narrative detail.

Painted in 1919, the portrait belongs to Modigliani’s late sequence of Czechowska images. The decorative fan and saturated background are distinctive, but the sitter remains composed through the same economy of contour and elongated proportion found in his quieter portraits.
