Van Gogh painted fourteen canvases devoted to flowering orchards between late March and late April 1888. The short blossom season encouraged him to work rapidly as peach, pear, apricot and other fruit trees transformed the countryside.

Here the central blossoming tree is surrounded by fresh greens, garden paths and cultivated plants. Yellow reed fencing and the vertical cypresses create strong structural lines around the softer flowering branches.

An Early Encounter with Cypress Trees

The dark cypresses provide a striking contrast with the pale blossom and brilliant sky. Van Gogh was fascinated by their unfamiliar form and colour, although his highly stylised Saint-Rémy cypress paintings were still more than a year away.

This makes the painting an important bridge between two of his major landscape themes.

About Vincent van Gogh
