Dent de Lion, Margate (ca. 1791), William Turner - Prints and Canvas Panels

The Dent-de-Lion gatehouse stands as the sole remaining structure of a fortified house, its historical significance underscored by its Grade II-star listing. Dating back to the early 15th century, this gatehouse, located in Garlinge, a kilometer inland from the north Thanet coast, offers a glimpse into medieval architecture. Constructed primarily from knapped flint, red and yellow brick, and adorned with ashlar dressings, the gatehouse showcases alternating bands of these materials. The southern facade features a grand carriage entrance, complemented by a smaller pointed archway for pedestrians, both topped with a crenellated parapet.

At the rear, a large round-headed archway with flint dressings stands as a testament to the gatehouse's defensive design. Remarkably, four embattled corner towers, each pierced with gunloops and arrow slits, grace the structure, emphasizing its military significance. Inside, newel staircases within these towers provide access to the roof. The gatehouse's ornate features include a stone string course above the entrance archways and a carved stone shield above the carriage arch, representing the Daundelyon family's coat of arms, the gatehouse's original builders.

This monument not only preserves medieval architectural prowess but also serves as a testament to the historical importance of the Daundelyon family. The Dent-de-Lion gatehouse, with its well-preserved elements and decorative details, stands as a tangible link to a rich medieval past, inviting visitors to explore the architectural marvels of a bygone era.
