About André Derain (1880–1954)
André Derain was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, widely recognised as one of the founding figures of Fauvism, alongside Henri Matisse. Born near Paris, Derain initially trained as an engineer before turning fully to art. His breakthrough came in the early 1900s when he embraced pure, unmixed colour and bold forms, producing landscapes and cityscapes that redefined modern painting.
By the time he painted Big Ben in 1906, Derain had already developed a reputation as a radical innovator. His London series, commissioned by dealer Ambroise Vollard, transformed familiar city landmarks into radiant visions of colour and light. Today, Derain’s works are celebrated in major museums worldwide, and his paintings remain milestones of early modernism.
