Ohara Koson Crow and Blossom Print

Crow and Blossom is a striking Japanese nature print in which Ohara Koson sets the dense black form of a crow against a delicate flowering branch. Creamy white blossoms surround the bird while the restrained grey-brown background allows both the crow and flowers to stand out with unusual clarity.

The contrast is central to the design. The crow feels solid, dark and intensely present, while the blossoms appear light and fragile. Koson uses this opposition to create an image that is dramatic without becoming busy.

A Masterpiece of Japanese Bird-and-Flower Art

Created around 1900, Crow and Blossom belongs to the Japanese tradition of kachō-ga — pictures of birds and flowers.

Koson was one of the great modern masters of this genre. Rather than creating elaborate backgrounds, he frequently allowed one bird, branch or flower to dominate the composition.

Here the crow sits prominently on the branch, its long beak, claws and layered feathers carefully observed. Blossoms cluster above and around the bird, while individual petals appear to drift into the open space below.

Colour, Composition and Negative Space

The restricted palette gives this Koson print much of its impact.

Deep black feathers form the visual centre, softened by touches of blue-grey and brown. Pale blossom provides the strongest contrast, while the muted background creates an atmospheric setting without competing for attention.

Large areas of open space are equally important. Koson does not attempt to fill every part of the sheet. Instead, the empty areas give the crow and branch room to breathe and reinforce the elegant vertical structure of the composition.

Ohara Koson's Artistic Style

Koson's bird prints combine close observation of nature with highly controlled decorative design. Feathers, claws, flowers and branches can be remarkably detailed, yet the overall composition remains simple and immediately readable.

This balance between naturalism and abstraction is one reason his work feels so compatible with modern interiors. A composition created more than a century ago can still look clean, graphic and contemporary.

About Ohara Koson

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) was a Japanese painter and print designer celebrated above all for images of birds, flowers and animals.

He worked during the Meiji, Taishō and early Shōwa periods and produced designs for several important publishers. In later years he became associated with publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō and the shin-hanga movement, often signing those works Shōson.

Koson's extraordinary sensitivity to birds, animals, seasonal plants and atmospheric effects made him one of the most distinctive Japanese nature artists of the early twentieth century.

Displaying Crow and Blossom

The dark crow and pale flowers make this print particularly effective against cream, putty, pale grey, sage and other neutral wall colours.

Its vertical format suits hallways, bedrooms, studies and spaces above console tables, while the restrained natural palette works beautifully in Japanese-inspired, Japandi, Scandinavian and minimalist interiors.

It can also form the focal point of a Japanese bird-and-flower gallery wall alongside Koson's owl, swallow, peacock and kingfisher designs.
