Three White Cottages in Saintes-Maries was painted in June 1888 during Vincent van Gogh’s brief visit to the Mediterranean fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. The compact landscape shows a row of simple white cottages set against brilliant southern colour.

Van Gogh had long been attracted to modest rural buildings and thatched roofs. In Saintes-Maries, however, the intense Provençal light transformed a familiar architectural subject through a much brighter palette than he had used during his earlier years in the Netherlands.

Van Gogh travelled from Arles to Saintes-Maries at the end of May 1888 and stayed for approximately a week. During the visit he painted the Mediterranean, fishing boats, the fortified church and the village cottages.

The trip gave him a new combination of coastal light, clear skies and traditional architecture to explore.

White Cottages and Mediterranean Colour

The pale buildings stand strongly against the surrounding greens, blues and warm earth tones. Van Gogh simplifies their forms into clear areas of colour while animated strokes enliven the grass, roofs and sky.

The painting demonstrates how rapidly his palette had changed after leaving Paris for southern France. Light itself seems to become part of the structure of the composition.
