Van Gogh was immediately struck by the old thatched houses of Auvers. He considered them increasingly rare and found their irregular, weathered forms particularly picturesque.

In this painting the cottages do not appear rigid or architectural. Roofs, hillside and foreground vegetation are all built from directional strokes, allowing the houses to feel almost organically embedded within the landscape.

From Brabant to Auvers

Thatched cottages had been recurring subjects in Van Gogh’s Dutch work, when his palette was dominated by brown, grey and dark green. Returning to similar forms in 1890, he approached them with the colour and brushwork developed through Paris, Arles and Saint-Rémy.

Blue sky, fresh greens, yellow vegetation and lighter walls therefore transform an old northern motif through the visual language of his mature period.
