Starry Night Over the Rhône by Vincent van Gogh
Starry Night Over the Rhône, painted in Arles in September 1888, is one of Vincent van Gogh’s great explorations of colour after dark. The Rhône stretches beneath a deep blue sky while stars shine above the town and orange gaslights throw long golden reflections across the water.
A couple walks along the riverbank in the foreground, adding an intimate human presence to a composition otherwise dominated by sky, water and reflected light.
Van Gogh’s Fascination with the Night
Van Gogh had wanted to paint a starry night for months. Rather than treating darkness as an absence of colour, he believed night could contain even richer chromatic relationships than daylight.
In this painting, multiple blues create the river and sky while orange and yellow lights provide intense complementary accents.
Stars and Reflections on the Rhône
The gaslights of Arles appear as glowing points along the opposite bank, their reflections descending vertically into the river. Above them, stars punctuate the blue sky with pale yellow and white.
The contrast between the horizontal sweep of river and sky and the vertical reflections gives the composition both calm and structure.
Starry Night Over the Rhône Prints for Interiors
The deep blue and gold palette makes this Van Gogh print especially effective in bedrooms, dining rooms and living spaces. It works beautifully with navy, teal, mustard, brass, dark timber and warm neutral interiors.
Its horizontal format makes it particularly suitable above sofas, beds and sideboards and an excellent companion to Café Terrace at Night or other Van Gogh nocturnes.
About Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) produced several major night paintings during his years in southern France. His experiments at Arles demonstrated that darkness could be represented through intense blues and complementary artificial light rather than through black alone.
Vincent van Gogh’s Painting Style
Van Gogh’s mature approach depended strongly on colour relationships and visible brushwork. In Starry Night Over the Rhône, relatively controlled horizontal strokes describe the river while brighter vertical reflections and luminous stars create concentrated points of energy.
