A Landscape Without Figures or Buildings

One of the most distinctive features of the painting is its simplicity. Van Gogh excludes farmers, cottages, carts and other narrative elements that appear in many of his agricultural landscapes.

Instead, the viewer encounters an almost uninterrupted expanse of vegetation. A pale road runs along the right side of the composition, providing the principal structural contrast to the undulating field.

Rhythmic Brushwork and Moving Wheat

The field is constructed from dense, curving strokes of emerald, blue-green, yellow-green and lighter tones. Van Gogh follows the direction of the vegetation so that the wheat seems to move across the landscape in waves.

After the intense yellows and oranges of Provence, Van Gogh found a cooler palette in the countryside around Auvers. In this painting, greens and blues dominate almost completely, punctuated by small areas of yellow vegetation.
