John Martin Fine Art Print: MacBeth

Macbeth shows the moment when Macbeth and Banquo encounter the Three Witches on the heath, but John Martin refuses to treat the episode as an intimate piece of theatre. The men stand tiny within a vast Scottish landscape as mist, lightning and jagged terrain turn the supernatural meeting into something much larger than the figures themselves.

Painted around 1820, the work is now in the National Galleries of Scotland. Martin pushes the army winding into the distance towards near-insignificance, using scale to hint at the catastrophic consequences of what has just been foretold. The witches seem to emerge from the weather rather than simply occupy the ground, blurring the line between landscape and supernatural event.
