Pandemonium imagines Hell not as a cave but as a colossal city. Satan stands on the rocky foreground while the palace of Pandemonium rises beyond him in endless colonnades, terraces and red-lit architecture. Rivers of molten fire cut through the darkness, making the entire landscape appear engineered from heat and shadow.

Painted in 1841 and now in the Louvre, the work takes its subject from John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Martin had already explored the scene in earlier engravings, but the painting gives it a more monumental, theatrical form. The palace dwarfs the demons gathered below and turns architecture into a measure of supernatural ambition, while the red glow makes the space feel both magnificent and hostile.
