Figures arranged beside the Seine

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte places standing and seated figures beneath trees beside the water. Repeated verticals, curved umbrellas and areas of shadow give the busy gathering an ordered appearance. Looking from the foreground towards the river reveals smaller groups and changes in the spacing between figures.

Bathers and the open riverbank

Bathers at Asnières gives the figures more open ground, with people resting or entering the water. The calm poses contrast with the working landscape visible beyond the river. Other studies follow workers, fields and gardens, broadening the collection beyond its best-known leisure scenes.

Harbours and the quiet horizon

The Channel at Gravelines, Evening uses masts, distant buildings and a sloping foreground to organise the view across still water. Small touches of colour are visible across both sky and land. The coastal selection offers a more sparsely populated counterpart to the large figure compositions.
