Vincent van Gogh’s Pink Roses in a Vase, usually titled simply Roses, was painted at Saint-Rémy in May 1890 shortly before the artist left Provence. An abundant bouquet rises from a deep green vase against a yellow-green background, creating one of the calmest and most harmonious flower paintings of his final year.

The roses appear predominantly pale today, but surviving traces of pigment reveal that many were originally pink. Van Gogh himself described the painting as a canvas of pink roses against a yellow-green background.

During his last days at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh completed an exceptional group of four flower still lifes devoted to roses and irises.

He conceived the pictures as a related ensemble, much as he had previously planned groups of sunflower paintings for decorative effect in Arles.

The colour scheme was originally more vivid than it appears today. Pink blossoms stood against yellow-green while the dark green vase provided a strong visual anchor.
