Martiros Sarian, also widely known as Martiros Saryan, was born in 1880 in Novaya Nakhichevan, now part of Rostov-on-Don. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and later developed his skills in studios led by Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov.

Early visits to Armenia transformed Sarian’s artistic vision. Inspired by the southern sunlight, mountains and ancient culture of his ancestral homeland, he moved away from subdued academic painting towards simplified forms and large areas of pure, luminous colour.

Sarian travelled through Turkey, Egypt and Persia, absorbing the visual traditions and intense light of the East. His work also reflects an awareness of European modern artists, particularly Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and the French Post-Impressionists. He ultimately developed an unmistakable style that combined Eastern and Western influences with Armenian landscape and culture.
