Machinery reduced to connected planes

Machinery combines upright pipes, curved forms and angled surfaces within a close arrangement of red, grey and pale colour. Parts remain suggestive of industrial objects while their edges connect across the image. Other building and machinery subjects vary the amount of recognisable structure included.

The number as the central image

Figure 5 in Gold repeats the numeral across a dense arrangement of red, dark and gold-coloured shapes. Lettering and smaller details give the image several scales of reading. The work offers a different subject from the buildings while retaining an interest in strong, overlapping forms.

Flowers in a looser setting

Yellow and Blue gathers bright blooms among pale and darker washes, with their edges less firmly bounded than the machinery. The natural subject provides a useful contrast within the collection. Other works include figures, boats and theatrical scenes as well as the architectural subjects.
