Blake's Angel of the Revelation is a scene from the Book of Revelation in which Saint John describes the visions he had on the island of Patmos. This scene is portrayed by Blake. The small figure of John, depicted from the back and located in the bottom center of Blake's image, is easy to overlook. Instead, what draws our attention is the massive angel that spans the image from top to bottom. The angel appears radiant and transcendent in spite of his muscular body. The angel's upper body is surrounded by a bright corona of light with his arm raised to the heavens. This contrasts with the gloomy and ominous scene below. The rest of John's vision emerges from the smoke cloud created by the translucent cloth that is draped over the angel's body in this lower portion of the work.

A large number of the subtleties in the picture decipher the scriptural entry (Disclosure 10:1-7) rather in a real sense. The text, for instance, depicts the holy messenger as having legs "like blazing support points" and shows that he had one foot ashore and the other on the ocean. Blake, on the other hand, takes some liberties elsewhere. The vague "seven thunders" of which the author writes are here personified as seven ghostly horsemen, and the rainbow that John places over the angel's head becomes an explosion of light. Blake also compresses time to show both the moment the angel "gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion," eliciting a response from the seven thunders, and the subsequent moment when he raised his hand in an oath to heaven. Blake does this by simultaneously representing both of these events.

Blake, who was disillusioned by the threat rationalism posed to creativity and skeptical of the pure reason espoused by Enlightenment philosophy, found such apocalyptic subject matter to be extremely appealing. This angel's visionary heroism stands in stark contrast to Blake's famous 1795 portrait of the scientist Isaac Newton, who the artist shows hunched over uncomfortably and looking into the void.
