Moonlight, Strandgade 30 turns an almost empty Copenhagen room into something mysterious and deeply beautiful. Moonlight slips through the tall window and settles across the walls and floor in muted lavender, grey and blue. There is no figure and almost no furniture to distract the eye; the room itself becomes the subject.

Hammershøi painted this part of his Strandgade 30 apartment repeatedly, watching it change from morning to noon and finally into night. Here, the darkness softens the architecture without erasing it. Window panes, wall panels and the adjoining doorway remain carefully ordered, while beyond the glass there is only a glimpse across the courtyard towards another part of the home. The effect is private and slightly dreamlike, as though the viewer has entered the room after everyone else has gone to bed.
