The machine within a familiar street

Humans Dissecting Martian War Machines places a tall mechanical structure among buildings, equipment and tiny people. The ordinary architectural setting makes the size of the central form more apparent. Other illustrations bring machines into streets, open ground and places where people try to respond to their presence.

A threat above the water

Martian Fighting Machine in the Thames Valley sets the long-legged form over a riverbank, with small figures in a boat below. Thin mechanical limbs and hanging shapes stand out against the pale sky and water. The change from street to landscape gives the encounter a more open setting.

The landing and the broken ground

Martians Land concentrates attention on a large circular form within disturbed earth and rising haze. The enclosed ground differs from the tall silhouettes of the fighting machines. Looking across the illustrations reveals several ways of making an unfamiliar object dominate a familiar environment.
