Vincent van Gogh’s Landscape with Ploughman was painted at Saint-Rémy in September 1889 and depicts a farmer and horse working an enclosed field beneath the rising sun. The scene was based on the agricultural landscape visible from Van Gogh’s room at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.

Broad areas of violet-blue ploughed earth alternate with strips of yellow stubble, while mountains and a small farmhouse establish the distant horizon. The glowing sun above the field intensifies the colour contrast and gives the entire scene a powerful sense of light.

The enclosed field outside the institution became one of Van Gogh’s major recurring subjects. He observed it through different seasons and stages of cultivation, painting wheat, reapers, ploughmen and changing weather.

In September 1889 Van Gogh wrote of returning to work on the view, specifically describing the opposition between purplish ploughed earth and yellow stubble against a background of hills.

The farmer and horse are relatively small within the expansive field. Their movement is echoed by long curving brushstrokes that sweep across the furrowed foreground.

Blue, violet, yellow and green create a landscape that is clearly derived from observation but transformed through Van Gogh’s increasingly expressive handling of colour.
