Amedeo Modigliani Print, Portrait Of The Artist Léopold Survage (1918)

Portrait Of The Artist Léopold Survage (1918) by Amedeo Modigliani

Léopold Survage is shown in a close portrait with a long face, dark hair and formal clothing, presented with restrained directness. The head and upper torso fill the canvas, with the long vertical of the face balanced by the broad dark mass of the jacket and a light shirt front.

Warm ochre and reddish flesh tones contrast with the dark suit and a muted neutral background, giving the portrait a sober clarity. The restrained setting keeps attention on the figure and on the subtle shifts of line and colour across the surface.

Painted in 1918, the portrait dates from Modigliani’s stay in the South of France, where he was in contact with Survage. The work is now associated with the Ateneum/Finnish National Gallery and records another artist from Modigliani’s immediate modernist circle.
