Henri Gervex (1852-1929) was a French academic painter known for his skillful blend of traditional techniques and modern subjects. While creating conventional historical works, he gained fame for his provocative contemporary scenes and portraits of Parisian high society. His painting "Rolla" caused scandal in 1878 due to its suggestive depiction of a prostitute.
