Kikyō Gate by Hasui Kawase

Kikyō Gate, created by Hasui Kawase in 1929 for his Twenty Views of Tokyo series, presents a remarkably serene view of the Tokyo Imperial Palace grounds. White gate buildings rise above massive stone walls beside a calm green-blue moat, while a sweeping pine tree connects the architecture with the surrounding landscape.

The scene is carefully ordered yet never rigid. Strong vertical and diagonal architectural forms occupy the right side of the composition, while water, willow and distant buildings open the view towards the left. Hasui turns a fortified entrance into a peaceful study of colour, reflection and space.

The Imperial Palace in Hasui's Tokyo

The monumental stone wall immediately establishes the importance of the location. Above it, the white plaster and dark tiled roofs of the gate structures create crisp geometric forms against the blue sky.

A large pine extends towards the centre of the composition, softening the architecture and visually linking foreground and distance. Across the moat, additional palace structures emerge between trees, while their pale forms and the surrounding greenery are reflected in the water.

Twenty Views of Tokyo

Hasui's Twenty Views of Tokyo combines historic landmarks, waterways and quieter urban locations to create a highly personal portrait of the Japanese capital. Produced during a period of rapid modernisation, the series frequently seeks moments of calm rather than crowded city life.

Kikyō Gate is particularly effective because the Imperial Palace architecture and carefully maintained landscape seem almost removed from the surrounding metropolis. Hasui presents the location through still water, strong geometry and an exceptionally clear blue-green palette.

Hasui Kawase and Shin-Hanga

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was one of the central figures of the shin-hanga movement. His landscape designs combine the compositional traditions of Japanese printmaking with sophisticated gradations of colour and an interest in natural light and atmospheric depth.

Although he is frequently associated with snow, rain and night scenes, Kikyō Gate demonstrates his equal mastery of clear daylight. Architectural detail remains precise without overwhelming the broader tranquillity of the scene.

Japanese Architecture Wall Art

The clean blue, green, grey and white palette gives this Hasui Kawase print considerable contemporary appeal. Its combination of historic architecture and calm water makes it particularly suitable for Japandi, minimalist, Scandinavian and Japanese-inspired interiors.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Hasui Kawase create Kikyō Gate?

What does Kikyō Gate depict?

The composition depicts part of the Tokyo Imperial Palace grounds, including traditional gate buildings, massive stone walls, pine trees and the surrounding moat.

The moat creates open space around the architecture and introduces reflections that soften the strong geometric forms of the palace walls.
