Raoul Dufy Prints: Colour, Light and Modern Life

Raoul Dufy created a world of brilliant blue seas, crowded regattas, fashionable racecourses, music, flowers, Mediterranean sunshine and elegant European cities. His paintings are immediately recognisable for their combination of bright colour, fluid drawing and rhythmic movement.

Although Dufy emerged from the experiments of Fauvism, he developed a highly individual style that extended beyond the movement. His subjects ranged from Normandy harbours and the French Riviera to Paris, London, Venice, orchestras, horse racing, interiors and flowers.

Raoul Dufy and Fauvism

Dufy was born in Le Havre, Normandy, in 1877. Growing up beside the English Channel gave him an early familiarity with beaches, ports, sailing boats and working maritime life. He later studied in Paris and encountered the radical colour of Henri Matisse and the Fauvist painters.

Fauvism encouraged Dufy to move away from naturalistic colour. Water could become an intense blue, buildings could be reduced to clear blocks of red or yellow, and outlines could move independently from painted areas.

Regattas, Sailing Boats and Harbours

Regattas became one of Dufy’s defining subjects. At Deauville, Cowes and other fashionable coastal resorts, he found a combination of sailing boats, flags, crowds, harbour buildings and open water that suited his decorative approach.

Paintings such as Cowes Regatta, Six-Meter Regattas, Regattas in Deauville and The Return of the Regattas organise masts, sails and flags into animated patterns. Dufy was less interested in recording every vessel precisely than in conveying the visual rhythm of a crowded harbour and the movement of a day beside the sea.

Deauville, Nice and the Mediterranean Coast

Dufy repeatedly painted the Normandy coast and the French Riviera. Deauville supplied harbours, casinos, beaches and regattas, while Nice and the Mediterranean offered stronger sunlight, palm-lined promenades and brilliant coastal colour.

Horse racing offered Dufy another subject filled with movement, colour and social activity. Horses, jockeys, grandstands and spectators appear as rapidly drawn forms distributed across broad areas of colour.
