Andō Hiroshige Biography

Utagawa Hiroshige was born in Edo in 1797 and became one of Japan's greatest landscape print designers.

His reputation was established by The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, whose landscapes combine famous places with ordinary travellers, changing seasons and weather.

Hiroshige continued to reinvent landscape throughout his career. His late Edo views introduced even more daring cropping and viewpoints, and his work became highly influential among European artists during the nineteenth century.
